A Different Kind of Power: Dame Jacinda Ardern

“That principle of kindness, it's something we teach our kids. Why shouldn't we role model that in the way we conduct ourselves in politics?”   Dame Jacinda Ardern

In a world often dominated by divisive rhetoric and self-serving ambition, Dame Jacinda Ardern stands as a beacon of a different kind of leadership. Her approach, aptly titled "A Different Kind of Power," contrasts sharply with the destructive and unpredictable style of leaders like Donald Trump. Where Trump projects division, Ardern embodies empathy; where Trump sows discord, Ardern builds bridges.

Integrity

Like Sir John Key, whom I also admire, Ardern has shown compassion and empathy during her time in office. I supported both leaders because of their leadership qualities and policies, not because of party allegiance. Ardern, like Key, possesses integrity, a quality that shines through in her actions and words.

Steady in Crisis

Ardern's leadership was particularly evident during times of crisis. She navigated the pandemic with a steady hand, earning global recognition for her effective and compassionate approach. She offered solace and strength after the White Island tragedy and the horrific Christchurch Mosque shootings. Her response to the Christchurch attacks, including a ban on semi-automatic weapons, demonstrated her commitment to decisive action rooted in empathy.

A Rising Tide

In her Harvard commencement address, Ardern spoke about the rising tide of division and disinformation, urging graduates to confront these challenges with empathy and dialogue. She highlighted New Zealand's diversity and progressive policies as examples of navigating societal shifts without succumbing to deep divisions. She also addressed the dangers of online radicalization and the need for responsible engagement in the digital age.

Empathy and Kindness

Ardern's recent interview further illuminates her unique perspective. She acknowledges the importance of empathy and kindness in leadership, qualities often dismissed as weaknesses. Her ability to connect with people on a human level, even amidst the pressures of political life, is a testament to her "different kind of power." As she said, "You can be a nerd, a crier, a hugger, you can be all of these things, and not only can you be here, you can lead, just like me.”

A Path Forward

Her words offer a powerful reminder that politics should be an act of public service, centered on the needs and well-being of the people. In a world yearning for connection and understanding, Dame Jacinda Ardern's leadership offers a hopeful path forward.
