The behaviour of Trump continues to shock. If you are the leader of a country and invited to the White House to meet Trump, you had better be prepared. Unless you come with a great, big, super-expensive gift, be prepared to be accused of whatever Trump can dream up to humiliate you.
Trump & Ramaphosa
The Prime Minister of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa met with President Donald Trump at the White House in May 2025. Trump confronted Ramaphosa with discredited claims of a white genocide in South Africa. Ramaphosa responded calmly, refuting the allegations and emphasising that most victims of violent crime in South Africa are black, not white. Despite the tense exchange, Ramaphosa focused the discussion on trade and economic relations between the two countries.
Unbelievable
Robert Reich in an opinion piece he wrote for Alternet, argued that Trump has entered a more extreme form of authoritarianism. He highlights alarming actions Trump has taken:
· Spreading false claims about violence against white South Africans and granting them refuge while restricting immigration for people of color.
· Profiting personally, including auctioning off a dinner to foreign investors and accepting a luxurious private jet from Qatar.
· Restricting foreign students, forcing Harvard to stop enrolling them and requiring current students to transfer or lose their legal status.
· Massive wealth redistribution, with House Republicans passing a bill favoring the wealthy at the expense of the poor.
· Targeting opponents, including legal threats against political figures, celebrities, and institutions.
· Suppressing judicial power, with legislation aiming to prevent courts from holding officials in contempt.
Reich stresses the importance of resistance, praising judges, public servants, and activists fighting back. He calls for widespread protests, particularly on June 14, Trump's birthday, against his militaristic celebration. Concluding with a hopeful message, emphasizing that tyranny fails when people refuse to submit.
