Golfers – Celebrate Your Own Way

Golf is an individual sport played by millions of varying abilities. For beginners it can be a difficult sport to master. Social golfers tend to figure it out for themselves, sometimes referring to YouTube or other sources to get pointers. More competitive individuals will hire an experienced coach to help with their swing. Many will join a club while others will play only public courses. Clubs have the advantage of organized competitions, using the official handicap system to grade players.

Competitive Golf

Golf is like all sports, it is competitive. Someone will win and someone will lose, one team will win while the other team will not. In team sports the winning team will celebrate raucously and loudly. In individual sport winners will be overjoyed but generally celebrate with less gusto in acknowledgement of your opponent who put their skill against your own. These are generalizations, there are always exceptions to the rule.

How Other Team Sports Celebrate Victory

New Zealand Black Ferns (Women's Rugby) – Haka Celebration

  • After winning the 2022 Rugby World Cup, the Black Ferns performed a powerful haka, a traditional Māori war dance, as a tribute to their culture and unity. A celebration and statement of pride identity and respect.

  • However, on the field when the Black Ferns grasped victory over England, there was relief expressed with loud cheering, slaps on the back, hugging and shouts of joy. Only later was the opposing team acknowledged with honor.

Golden State Warriors (NBA) – Champagne Locker Room Party

  • Following their 2022 NBA Championship win, the Warriors celebrated with the classic champagne shower in the locker room.

  • Players wore goggles, popped bottles, and danced to music—an exuberant ritual in American sports.

  • However, on the court when victory was assured, the Golden State Warriors would have celebrated in much the same way as the Black Ferns.

Individual Sports Victory Celebrations

Serena Williams (Tennis) – Signature Twirl and Smile

  • After winning matches, Serena often does a joyful twirl on court, sometimes followed by blowing kisses to the crowd.

  • It’s a graceful, confident gesture that reflects her personality and connection with fans.

Usain Bolt (Track & Field) – Lightning Bolt Pose

  • Known worldwide, Bolt’s iconic “To Di World” pose - pointing one arm skyward - became his trademark after victories.

  • It’s symbolic of his speed, charisma, and Jamaican pride.

Tennis players and athletes who win their matches or races will celebrate in their own way but will also acknowledge respectfully their fellow competitors.

The Ryder Cup

The next Ryder Cup will be held from September 26 to 28, 2025, at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, USA. Keegan Bradley will lead Team USA; Luke Donald will lead Team Europe.

Golf’s ultimate men’s team sport, The Ryder Cup, will be as competitive and as parochial as it has always been in past challenges. As the competition unfolds, the crowd’s energy will surge with every twist in momentum - roaring with patriotic fervor when Team USA sinks clutch putts, then gasping in stunned silence as Europe counters with every huge drive and successful putts of their own. Tension will build hole by hole, transforming cheers into chants and nervous murmurs into thunderous applause as each match reaches its climax. The gritty New York crowd will be vocal and enthusiastic, who will expect an electric atmosphere that swings between exuberant joy and down in the dumps. The drama will be tense with every drive, chip, and putt in this transatlantic battle for golfing supremacy.

Whoever reigns supreme the team and their supporters will react just as the Black Ferns and the Golden State Warriors did.

Cameron Young ‘s First Victory

Cameron Young to me appears to be a personality that is not overtly expressive, he seems to be conservative in nature. He takes every shot as it comes, if there is adversity, he will assess it then deal with it in a matter-of-fact way. After his first victory, his nature, what he is as shown by how he plays his golf, skillful and powerful, yet with acceptance of his ability and with quiet humility.

His acceptance of victory would not be as a team reacts to victory, or with a twirl, or as a lightning bolt, but with a smile and simple acceptance in speech and attitude. I agree with Foodlepup, “I have no problem with reserved celebrations.”
