“Are Hybrids Dead.” My Golf Spy newsletter headline.

The headline linked me to an article promoting Titlist T250 and U505 Irons: New Options for Golfers Who Hate Hybrids – Tony Covey, My Golf Spy. I have no doubt Titlist irons are quality products, and will appeal to golfers of a standard that may encourage them to replace a hybrid or two.
Hybrids Everywhere
Hybrids are a common sight on the range and the course. Golf shops I visit have a healthy range of them. In fact, they’ve become more versatile, customizable, and widely adopted than ever.
I have one hybrid in my bag; it does the work of a 5 or 4-iron. Any long iron I use the hybrid or go down the shaft of a 5-wood. My hybrid is really versatile for mid-to-long iron range. I have confidence it will get me out of trouble from light rough, or when I land it short to run onto the green.
Why Hybrids Are Still Hot
Forgiveness & Ease of Use: Hybrids help players launch the ball higher and straighter, especially from tough lies. That’s a huge win for mid- and high-handicap golfers.
Tech Innovation: Brands like Titleist, Callaway, and Cobra have introduced hybrids with adjustable lofts, weight ports, and AI-enhanced faces for better control and distance.
Tour-Level Adoption: Even pros are swapping long irons for hybrids. The Ping G440 and Callaway Elyte are popular for their high launch and soft landings.
Expanded Loft Options: Some hybrids now go up to 7-iron replacements (like Ping’s 34º G440), making them viable across more parts of the bag.
Trends in 2025
Customization: Adjustable hosels and weight systems let players fine-tune ball flight and spin.
Compact vs. Oversized Heads: Players can choose between iron-like profiles (e.g., Titleist GT3) or confidence-boosting larger heads (e.g., GT1 or Cobra King Tec).
Visual Appeal: Sleek designs and premium finishes are making hybrids more attractive at address.
General Comments
I will never ditch my hybrid — its visually appealing and it works.
I’m a hybrid convert, and I'm not ashamed to admit it because hybrids help me play better. My approach shots with my hybrids, which replace my 2-3 and four irons, fly higher. It lands softer and stop quicker. I do mishit these clubs, but the results are much better and, more importantly, findable.
Incredible, incredible clubs. They are miles more forgiving on misfits. I'm not joking that I hit the club 200 yards on the nose out of the first cut of rough. Uphill, walked this off with GPS. I would have never come close to that with my old 4-iron.
I replaced all irons 3 to 6 with Cobra hybrids. I have noticed very good results as I'm not long off the tee. Even if my second shot is 150 metres out, I can hit the green about one out of three times.
I have a set of Cleveland HB3s and I love them. I have been playing hybrid irons for five years now. I tried to switch back to standard irons earlier this year and just couldn't do it. The hybrids are so much easier to hit.
I keep both the 3-iron and a 3 hybrid in my bag. They are both 18° loft. I get about 15 to 20 more yards from a well struck hybrid compared to a well struck 3 iron. The hybrid is also much easier from the rough.
These quotes reflect the most common sentiments. Hybrids are easier to hit, more forgiving, and have helped many golfers improve their consistency and confidence on the course.
Conclusion
Stick with your hybrids, they are great clubs, easy to use and you get good results.
