Moving House

“I hired professional movers… I wish.” Me Daydreaming.

Moving house is an experience most of us would prefer to happen as little as possible. It’s nature’s way of telling you that you kept too many cups and saucers, or we just want to have keep-sakes. We all have a bit of hoarder within us but mostly we prefer to keep memories of people and places that were a part of our lives.
My family and I have moved often enough to know that hassles are part of the journey. We are renters therefore we move more often. Those who are fortunate enough to own their own homes tend to move less. There are two main reasons people move, because they have to or it’s personal choice.
Logistics
Our last major move was about 10 years ago. We had been in our previous rental for 13 years before the move. In 13 thirteen years you accumulate a lot of stuff. During those years family members come and go. By the end of our time in our very pleasant home, within walking distance to the sea, my partner and I, both in our 60s were the only ones left. Between us we packaged everything we wanted to take with us. Boxes galore, masking tape, newspaper and clean wrapping for delicate items all made for undamaged transport.
Fortunately, my son and his partner were still in living in the same city as ourselves. They had access to a work vehicle, whose employer was happy to have the truck used for the relocation. On the day of the move my brother came along to help us load and unload.
A Warning
I admit to nativity or was it just carelessness. The move was completed on the same day with some items stored in a small garden shed. I cannot remember why but we stayed the night at our old rental. When we returned the next day, a sports bike and a large toolbox had disappeared. We had been burgled. The house was secure but there was no lock on the garden shed. Make sure everything is secure if you do not want prying eyes to claim your property. The loss was more a nuisance with the power tools the costliest.
We have been in this neighborhood for 10 years. It has been a happy time with only school kids being scallywags during school holidays. Roaming dogs were an issue, but community education and animal enforcement officials solved the problem. When we travel away our neighbors keep an eye on the property.
Wind Up
Moving house can be a traumatic exercise if it is unplanned without thought given to the logistics of the move. With the help of family and friends it can be less stressful while helping to cement relationships. Hiring professional movers is great but in these times of increased cost of living, help from family is a blessing.

Moving is always a lot more work than anticipated! Despite your introduction to your new area, it's great to read you seem to be in a good community.
