Trump, Maduro, and the Global Circus

These days, waking up in New Zealand and checking the news feels a bit like our weather, four seasons in one day. With Trump in charge of the most powerful nation on the planet you never know what decision or action he will take that will make worldwide news. More often than not it will be something rotten, but you will still hope for the best. And then boom: Trump’s gone and ordered the snatch‑and‑grab of Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, it's like he’s judge, jury and executioner of international law.
Arrogance & Stupidity
The arrogance of it all is so over‑the‑top it’s stunning in its stupidity. Trump acts like he’s the self‑appointed sheriff of Earth, strutting and throwing his power around without any regard for international law or for the mission and values of the United Nations. Kiwis everywhere stared at their screens thinking, Bro, you can’t even run a barbecue without burning the sausages, and now you’re arresting foreign leaders.
Trump Drama
Grabbing Maduro and his wife is déjà vu. Every time Trump does something dramatic, it’s like we’ve seen this episode before, but there's more chaos, more pain for everyone.
Remember the 6 January 2021 protests after he lost the 2020 election? The Capitol looked like the gates of hell had been opened to the hordes of "proud boys and girls". Even after that despicable event he comes back into office in 2025 and pardons many of those same violent protesters on day one of his second term. Most presidents spend their first day being brought up to date on current issues, not giving pardons to his jailed mates from the 6 January 2021 protests. He walks in and those pardons is number one on his to-do-list.
When he suddenly announces he’s arrested Maduro and is now “in charge” of Venezuela, Kiwis didn’t wonder why Trump took such an action — we all knew, it was all about the "Oil" regardless of the excuses sprouted. Such an action is not a shock anymore; its resignation mixed with mild disbelief that the world keeps letting this happen.
New Zealand
From down here in New Zealand, the whole thing feels like watching a toddler driving a tractor, it's horrifying. It's fascinating to watch, but you’re desperately hoping no one gets flattened. We’re a small country, sure, but we do like rules, order, and leaders who don’t treat geopolitics like a personal side quest.
Stop
Yet here we are, watching a superpower send in troops to arrest a foreign president, declare itself in charge, and then pivot to arresting and killing innocents on USA soil by Nazi ICE troopers. Kiwis are saying, “Please stop. Please reconsider. Please hand the keys to someone sensible, someone honest, someone who won't start WW3.”
What a Circus
But until that day comes, we’ll keep doing what we do best: shaking our heads, making a cuppa, and muttering, “What a circus, far out, bro… far out.”
