Throughout my working life, I was fortunate to find roles I enjoyed—though scattered among them were jobs I would rather forget. For me, work was never synonymous with purpose. Work was a necessity, a means to provide for my family. Purpose, on the other hand, was found in creating happiness for my loved ones: building an environment of love, enjoyment, and growth.

Why Work

Work is a fundamental part of human existence. It shapes how we spend our days, how we understand ourselves, and how we connect with others. At its most basic, work provides the essentials—food, shelter, and security. But beyond survival, it is also the framework through which we contribute to society and define our identity.

Hard Work

Hard work means more than simply showing up. It is the extra hours, the overtime, the late nights and weekends spent finishing projects. For the self-employed, it is taking on additional contracts and learning to manage time and resources wisely.

One of the greatest investments most people make is buying a home. In the past, my boomer generation could often achieve this on a single income. Today, for most families, two incomes are essential to save a deposit and service a mortgage.

Home ownership demands sustained effort—focused, consistent work even when tasks feel difficult or uninspiring. Perseverance, discipline, and resilience are the qualities that make such goals achievable. Mental, physical, and emotional energy all converge in the pursuit of results.

Purpose

We work hard not only for material gain but because it fosters growth—personal, family, and professional. Regardless of the field—professional, trade, retail, service, or entertainment—hard work brings benefits.

Success elevates self-esteem, earns respect, and creates fulfilment. It helps us realize dreams and cultivates life skills such as problem-solving, responsibility, and resilience. Ultimately, hard work strengthens families, communities, and the broader economy.

Work and Purpose

Meaningful work provides direction. It allows us to contribute to something larger than ourselves—supporting family, building community, or advancing a cause. Work challenges us to learn, adapt, and grow.

For me, work and purpose have become inseparable. Work is not only a necessity but also a pathway to purpose. Whether the goal is home ownership, family well-being, or community improvement, the act of working itself embodies purpose.
