Consistency – A Personal Habit

“Long-term consistency trumps short-term intensity.” Bruce Lee

I started writing 5 blogs a week consistently since September 2024. Except for the past week, where the blog, “The Danger of Trump”, was a deliberate strategy to keep the message to the forefront for 7 days, all the others were posted at the same time, each weekday. Twice, including today’s blog, the publishing time was missed. I put these 2 lapses down to human frailty, a slackness in attitude not conducive to consistency.

When I first started blogging, I was advised by my mentor, Phil, to blog at least one month ahead. I have never come close to achieving that goal. At times I was 3 or 4 days ahead, but it was due to Phil’s contributions that made it possible.

Morning Kickstart

When my day goes well it is because my early morning routine is followed. I get things done when each day is started in the same way – consistency. I set my alarm to 5am or 6am, it depends what activities I have planned for the day. In either case my morning routine is as listed.

  • Face wash

  • Stretching and Exercise

  • Breakfast

  • Diary entry recording the previous day’s activity, the morning exercise and weight, and a to do list for the day – includes blog topic, time allocated.

Looking back at the week, while following the routine, it’s amazing what can be achieved.

Mindset & Self Discipline

Mindset

Mindset is how you interpret your experiences. A growth mindset, views challenges as opportunities and setbacks as part of the learning process. Setbacks like failures are just part of the experience on the learning curve, they are progressive steps. Your mind leads to persistence by shifting focus from perfection to progress.

It's not just how you act — it’s how you think. It’s what you are doing that determines whether you keep going.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is the ability to stick with actions, your own personal ‘morning kickstart’. Remember consistency in getting a good start to the day, also serves to achieve long-term goals, even when short-term temptations or discomforts arise. This happens to me a lot, especially when the temptation is live sport. It’s not about willpower but about establishing systems and habits that make consistency easier and more automatic.

My long-term goal is to get one week ahead on my blogs, then extending it to one month over time. In doing so it will mitigate the damage of staying up late to watch live sport, like the US Tennis Open at the end of August.

Execution and Daily Flow

The trick isn’t fighting yourself every morning — it’s designing your day, so it flows toward what matters. Being consistent each day with your personal morning kickstart program is what sets you up for a productive day.

Take Action

If you haven’t considered a morning routine, design one that suits your own personal goals and objectives. A consistent morning routine will help you tremendously in your personal life and those of your loved ones around you.
