Is Work and Purpose the Same?

“Nothing will work, unless you do.” Maya Angelou.

Hard work

I have been fortunate to find work I enjoyed during my working life. Amongst the decades of productive work were a scattering of jobs I would rather forget. I never thought of work as a purpose. Work was a necessity for me and my family. Purpose was the happiness of my family members, by creating an environment for them of love, enjoyment and growth.

Why Work

Work is a fundamental part of human life. It is how we spend our days; it is how we understand who we are, and how we connect with others. Work provides the means to secure the necessities of life, food, shelter, and security.

Hard Work

Hard work is putting in the hours including overtime, finishing projects even if it involves working evenings and weekends. Taking on extra contracts if you are self-employed. Think smarter on how you manage your time and resources.

The biggest investment most of us can make is buying a house of our own. Without harping back too much to the past, my boomer generation could buy a house on one income. These days, unless you are the exception to the rule, without doubt a minimum of two incomes are necessary to save the deposit and to service the mortgage.

It takes hard work, consistently putting in focused, sustained effort, even when tasks are challenging or uninspiring, in order to achieve the means to buy your own home. Any goal you set involves perseverance and the other characteristics that helped you with home ownership. Your mental, physical, and emotional energy are all necessary when working hard to get the results you want.

Purpose

We do hard work because it leads to personal, family, and professional growth. No matter what your work is, be it professional, in a trade, in retail or other service or entertainment industry, there are benefits to hard work.

Success from your hard work increases your self-esteem, earns the respect of others, and brings a sense of fulfilment and purpose. Hard work helps us realize our dreams and develops in us important life skills, like problem solving, responsibility and resilience. Ultimately, working hard benefits ourselves, our families, the wider community, and the economy of our country.

Work and Purpose

Engaging in meaningful work can give life direction and help individuals contribute to something larger than themselves. Whether that is supporting our family, building a community, or advancing a cause. Work fosters personal growth. It challenges us to learn new skills, solve problems and adapt to change.

Now, to me work and purpose are the same. You work to achieve a goal, for individual, family, and community well-being. The purpose, the goal, is to work to improve your environment by buying your own home. Home ownership illustrates one example. Work is a necessity but in and of itself it is also a purpose.
